Just discovered a podcast called the "Future of Code" by a nice young man named Steve Krowse. Listen to the 3 minute introduction here: futureofcoding.org/episodes/001

You may have come across it already but if not, I do recommend giving episode 1 a listen! Can't help but admire Steve's 'can-do' attitude and optimism. And if you get to episode 2, you find out that the whole podcast started out through teaching kids to code. It's very charming!

(ok I'm messing around a little bit here but if you haven't listened to the early episodes I'd highly recommend it - there's something raw & inspiring about them) (I've been doing a re-binge of the whole catalog recently)

It's the enthusiasm!

I asked ChatGPT what it had to say about Bard:

"Behold, Google's LLM Bard,

A new creation, unique and avant-garde,

Yet, will it flourish or will it mar,

In Google's graveyard, among the stars."

Catty! I like it 🙂

I wrote a post on Nightingale that was just published today, exploring the clever data viz design of the Dark Sky app. I reference Bret Victor’s Magic Ink, specifically that Dark Sky is a context-sensitive information graphic .

Apple’s weather app incorporated some but not all of the design metaphors.

This was awesome! But I'm afraid I have some tough love.

haha yeah I think they always had challenges on the business side 🤷

Kartik Agaram 2023-03-23 00:37:45

My response is kinda unfair. You're writing from the perspective of the product, while I'm focusing on the user (i.e. you). Most of the time, for me, a better experience doesn't seem worthwhile if it's going to just be taken away for arbitrary reasons I have no control over. But I do see the effect that great UI had on you, even if it was short-lived.

I enjoyed reading that post! Totally missed that your wrote it

“Better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all”

Depends on how abusive the relationship turns out to be!

Justin Blank 2023-03-23 20:51:06

That’s really not apt.

Kartik Agaram 2023-03-23 21:10:52

Really, you haven't ever found Google or Facebook or Twitter or Apple to seem abusive?

I think it's reasonable to say personal relationships are different from relationships with companies. We don't make ourselves as vulnerable with companies, so it makes no sense to call anything abuse.

It also seems fertile to think of them as akin to personal relationships (hence my <3 above). But then it seems to me you do have to admit the full spectrum of emotions a relationship can engender.

Srini K 2023-03-23 22:05:13

yeah Kartik Agaram FWIW I had to pay $4 or $5 for the app 🙂 but clearly wasnt’ enough revenue. People just don’t really pay for weather apps unfortunately.

I think Apple actually noticed that there were lots of free weather apps doing sketchy things from a user privacy standpoint + stuffed with ads, b/c again historically people didn’t pay for a weather app. They may have bought Dark Sky to power WeatherKit, and make it easier for other people to build weather apps. So interesting roller coaster overall

@Jacob Haip glad you liked it! We should do another FoC Boston meetup sometime, it’s been forever
