Konrad Hinsen 2022-03-07 15:25:51 Many of us want to move away from text. Others want more of it. This is the most extreme TUI (text user interface) project I have seen so far: https://github.com/Textualize/textual CSS-defined themes for the terminal!
Orion Reed 2022-03-07 16:12:05 I love this aesthetic, I often write small TUI programs and have always used curses, ncurses, or their descendants. This looks like it might be a good replacement! There’s something very compelling about a character grid. I think of it like a low-res pixel array but each pixel can also be a symbol/glyph.
Wouldn’t have the same feel at all if it wasn’t monospace because you lose the grid, though changing the aspect ratio of the “pixels” seems fine, which seems to be around 1:2 on average.
Konrad Hinsen 2022-03-08 07:06:00 Wow, Charm looks like something I might actually want to use!
The aesthetics are indeed part of the attraction of modern TUIs. A refreshing level of simplicity/minimalism, which is often just the right level to aim at.

Cole Lawrence 2022-03-09 23:08:56 I forgot about how I looked into Tractor while at Story, until I saw another video about Tractor with #golang. IIRC, I found most all of what Lindsay is saying here true about his design for Tractor. I recall it being extremely easy to set up something like a tunneled videos stream between multiple computers. I'm excited more is being spoken about the Tractor system, since I think I only got a glimpse of it back then.

Hello đź‘‹ FoC community! Today I was introduced to the book:
Nothing Sacred by Douglas Rushkoff
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/139712.Nothing_Sacred
It seems it has some relation to open source. So I was wondering, has anyone here read the book? What could you say about it and it’s relation to open source? Thank you 🙏
Tom Lieber 2022-03-09 22:17:23 I missed Women’s Day by a hair, but I'm still curious: who’s got links to inspirational work by women?
I can start with Margaret Burnett. Her papers introduced me to information scent / information foraging theory in the context of programming interfaces, and it turned out she had a long history in end-user programming and explainability too: https://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~burnett/reprints.html
Jack Rusher 2022-03-11 17:50:12 Scott Anderson 2022-03-12 04:44:39 I came to post this. We don't talk about hardware in this group much (even though I think it is an important part of the future of coding), but yeah, this looks really cool
William Taysom 2022-03-14 05:40:53 It's the delicious composability. Magnetic dependency injection.
Deepak Karki 2022-03-11 17:57:12 https://batou.xyz/content/augmented-desk
Augmented Environments are physical spaces where people can work and learn, collectively or individually, by using day-to-day tools such as pen and paper, or other quotidian objects. This affordable and extensible system augments the user’s capabilities without being invasive, recognising their natural language and humane behaviours.
Deepak Karki 2022-03-11 18:04:33 This reminds me of dynamic land. Although this might be a bit more limited, I think its scoped pretty well and has some cool demos.
Orion Reed 2022-03-11 18:37:31 Jack Rusher thanks for the link to Mackay! I like the work she's done more recently with Michael Lafon but haven't seen that one before.
